People of the Word

Painting. 2025-2026

People of the Word is a series of symbolic portraits of Ukrainian writers.

In my view, a person is more than a face in a photograph or a date of birth. Each of us is ultimately defined by what we leave behind. This is especially evident in the lives of outstanding representatives of the Ukrainian creative intelligentsia. Despite discrimination, persecution, censorship, and prohibitions, these individuals created something greater than their own biographies — works that continue to shape society, influence culture, and inspire new generations.

For this reason, I deliberately avoid realistic depictions of faces in this series. Instead, the writers appear as “smiling shadows” — embodiments of memory, creative legacy, and cultural presence. Drawing on the visual language of ancient icons, these compositions immerse the viewer in a unique sacralized reality woven from the most recognizable motifs of the authors’ works, symbolic imagery, and pivotal moments of their lives.

Thus, what we see before us are not merely historical figures, but personifications of their creative legacy — a literature that outlives its authors and continues to live on through the centuries.
